LANSING, Mich. — State Sen. Mike Nofs, R-Battle Creek, issued the following statement in response to the shooting in Kalamazoo on Saturday that killed six people and injured two others:
“As many of you have heard, on Saturday an act of senseless violence took the lives of six individuals — at least three of whom were from my district — and seriously injured two others.
“In fact, among the citizens we lost, was an individual who regularly contacted my office to share her professional experience and personal insight on the many education issues considered by the Senate.
“My prayers go out to the victims of this tragedy and their families. May God comfort them and bring strength in the difficult days ahead.
“I want to commend the law enforcement officers from the Michigan State Police, Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Department, and the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety for their cooperative police work and quick action in apprehending the suspect in this case, which undoubtedly prevented further loss of life.
“The ongoing investigation will certainly provide more information about the shooter and hopefully what led to these vile and inexplicable acts. It is then up to our legal system to ensure that justice is served for these innocent victims.”
