Legislation would give tax credit for veterans home donations

LANSING — Sen. Mike Nofs co-sponsored legislation this week that would make an individual who donates to a state veterans’ home eligible to receive an income tax credit.

“As we commemorated Veterans Day this week, it serves as a great reminder of the many veterans’ homes located throughout our state and the invaluable services they provide the men and women who have served in uniform,” said Nofs, R-Battle Creek. “This bill makes it easier for residents to support those who have protected us and is another great way to say thanks for defending our country.”

Senate Bill 987 permits taxpayers to receive a credit for 50 percent of their contribution with the credit capping at $100 for individuals and $200 for a couple filing a joint tax return.

The bill, which was authored by Sen. Wayne Kuipers, R-Holland, awaits further action in committee.
