Jackson and Battle Creek ranked nationally in corporate facility project numbers

LANSING, Mich.— The award-winning Site Selection magazine announced Wednesday that Battle Creek and Jackson tied for second place in the U.S. in the number of major new corporate projects and expansions in 2012 among areas with fewer than 200,000 residents.

Battle Creek and Jackson each tallied 13 projects last year.

“I am thrilled that the two largest cities in my district are leading the nation in new corporate projects and expansions,” said Sen. Mike Nofs, R-Battle Creek. “This just reaffirms the strides the governor and the Legislature have been making in reinventing Michigan and improving our business climate.

“During my campaign I pledged to work for ‘Jobs First, Jobs Now,’ a commitment that continues to be my primary focus.”

Michigan also ranked fourth among states in the annual nationwide competition for major new corporate projects and expansions. The rankings include projects that create at least 50 jobs, have a total investment of at least $1 million, or expand facilities at least 20,000 square feet.

When asked for the primary reason for the strong showing by Michigan, Nofs noted that it’s not just one thing.

“I think it’s a combination of issues that we’ve been working hard on over the last several years, including tax and regulatory reform, paying down debt, and using sound budgeting principles that are signaling to investors and business owners that we are serious about making Michigan a more welcoming and competitive place to do business. Announcements like this show that we’re on the right track.”
